Baseball Drops Pivotal Doubleheader to Roger Williams Friday
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team endured a pair of losses to Roger Williams Friday afternoon at Adams Field, falling 6-1 and 5-4.
The Lions slip to 15-17 on the year and 2-8 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Hawks improve to 13-16-1 overall and 3-7 in league action.
Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) landed three hits on the day, scored one run and stole a base. Zach Zaino (Bourne, Mass.) finished with a pair of base knocks, one RBI and one run scored while Cameron Fiorentino (Uxbridge, Mass.) chipped in with two hits and a run scored.
In game one, Roger Williams scored six unanswered runs to earn a 6-1 victory.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Jeremy Wagner scooted home on a throwing error after swiping third base to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
The Hawks leveled the score at 1-1 in the top of the second. Sean Gaffney singled to drive in Shawn Cariglio for the tying run.
The visitors claimed a one-run edge, 2-1, in the third inning. Jamie Timothy plated Kevin Baker with a base knock.
Roger Williams added a pair of runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 4-1. Chris Bosco and Caulin Rogers both crossed the dish as Timothy roped a triple.
The Hawks scored twice in the top of the seventh to widen the margin to 6-1. Baker and Timothy each landed RBI singles in the inning.
Ragan Cole (Alamogordo, N.M.) pitched five innings and struck out four. Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) tossed one inning of relief and notched one strikeout. Kenny Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) fanned one batter as he and Ryan Spina (Selden, N.Y.) combined to work the final frame.
In the nightcap, Eastern Nazarene's late charge came up just short in a 5-4 setback.
Roger Williams generated one run in the top of the first to snag an early 1-0 advantage. Bosco scored from first base on a hard-hit single by Timothy.
The Hawks tacked on two runs in the second to push their lead to 3-0. Baker tripled to drive in Rogers then scurried home on an error.
The visitors chalked up a pair of runs in the third to extend the gap to five runs, 5-0. Mike Allwein doubled to plate Cariglio and later came around to score as Matt Moskal grounded out.
The Lions clawed back with a four-run frame in the home half of the fifth inning to slice the deficit to 5-4. With two runners in scoring position, Zaino roped a single to knock in Fiorentino from third. Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) followed with an RBI base hit to drive in Kurt Picarelli (Montrose, N.Y.). Zaino crossed the dish as Jeremy Wagner reached base on an error and Andrew Santora (Middle Village, N.Y.) delivered an RBI double to score Justin Wagner from third.
Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) threw two innings and registered one strikeout as he started on the mound. Nick Story (Gilbert, Ariz.) hurled five scoreless innings of relief and finished with one strikeout while surrendering just one hit.
