Baseball Drops CCC Doubleheader at Gordon Wednesday
WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team endured two losses at Gordon Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-4 and 10-1.
The Lions sink to 12-11 on the year and 0-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Fighting Scots improve to 15-7 overall and 4-2 in league play with the outcomes.
Cameron Fiorentino (Uxbridge, Mass.) registered two hits, one home run, two RBIs and one run scored on the afternoon. Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) finished with a pair of base knocks, two runs scored and one RBI. Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) chipped in with a hit, one RBI and crossed the dish once while Zach Zaino (Bourne, Mass.) swiped three bases.
Gordon rallied past Eastern Nazarene in the opening contest, 5-4.
Eastern Nazarene opened the scoring in the fourth as Fiorentino belted a solo home run to give the guests a 1-0 edge.
Gordon equalized in the home half of the frame as Chris Leavitt tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Daniel Quint.
The Lions produced three runs in the fifth to seize a 4-1 advantage. Jeremy Wagner laced a one-out single to center to drive in Anthony Esposito (Mount Royal, N.J.) from second. Jeremy Wagner crossed the dish as Carmody reached on a fielder's choice. Fiorentino notched his second RBI of the contest with a base hit to center to score Carmody from second base.
The Fighting Scots cut the deficit to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Leavitt motored home as Quint reached on an error before Addison Tarr doubled to left-center to drive in Matt Moffat.
The hosts walked off with a 5-4 win after plating two runs in the seventh. Moffat leveled the score with an RBI single to left to plate Alex Smith. Christian Hodge delivered the game-winning hit as he singled to center to score Leavitt from second.
Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) threw 5.2 innings and registered three strikeouts while allowing just one earned run. Xavier Faria (Assonet, Mass.) and Nick Story (Gilbert, Ariz.) each worked one-third of an inning of relief.
The Fighting Scots' offense produced 10 base hits en route to posting a 10-1 win in game two.
Gordon pushed one run across in the second to snag a 1-0 lead. Moffat drove in Travis Benoit with an RBI base knock.
Fiorentino threw
The home side generated four runs in the third inning to widen the gap to 5-0. Smith plated a pair of RBIs with a single to centerfield before scurrying home on an error. Hodge picked up an RBI as he reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Jeremy Jackson to cross the plate.
The Fighting Scots added three runs in the fourth to extend their advantage to 8-0. Dean Demers tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly by Leavitt before Benoit ripped a double to right-center to knock in Smith and Jackson.
Gordon scored twice in the sixth to reach double-digits, 10-0, as Smith and Hodge each landed RBI doubles in left field in the frame.
The Lions got on the board in the seventh to trim the margin to 10-1. After Carmody scorched a lead-off double down the left field line and advanced to third, James Coury (Milford, Conn.) collected his first RBI of the season as his grounder drove in Carmody.
Fiorentino tossed 3.1 innings and notched three strikeouts. Brandon Wynne (West Haven, Conn.) struck out two batters in two innings of relief action in his third appearance of the spring. Andrew Ventura (Staten Island, N.Y.) worked two-thirds of an inning in his second relief outing of the year.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene steps out of conference play to face off against Lesley April 14 under the lights at Trum Memorial Field in Somerville, Massachusetts.
