Baseball Drops Midweek Clash to Southern Vermont, 8-1
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team absorbed a 8-1 setback to Southern Vermont Wednesday afternoon at Adams Field.
The Lions fall to 11-7 on the year after having their six-game winning-streak halted. The Mountaineers improve to 6-11 overall with their third win in a row.
Kurt Picarelli (Montrose, N.Y.) and Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) each collected two hits on the day. Josue Basilis (Bronx, N.Y.) registered one base knock and drove in one RBI.
The home team broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 1-0 edge. Basilis picked up his sixth RBI of the season, driving in Jose Arebalo (Brentwood, Calif.) from third.
Southern Vermont jumped ahead 5-1 in the seventh. John Aranci belted a two-run homer to left-centerfield and Anthony Mercuri scored on a groundout by Austin Teitelbaum. Dan Mason and Rob Spatafore also crossed the dish with two outs in the frame.
The Mountaineers tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth to widen the margin to 8-1. RJ Pingitore drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Spatafore. Luigi Magliocca and Zack Stacey both scored on an errant pick-off attempt.
In his first start of the spring, Ragan Cole (Alamogordo, N.M.) tossed 6.1 innings and recorded four strikeouts. Ryan Spina (Selden, N.Y.) hurled one-third of an inning in his team-leading sixth appearance of the year. Rob Dukes (Spencer, Mass.) pitched one inning in his fifth relief outing of the spring. Nick Story (Gilbert, Ariz.) worked one inning as he toed the rubber for the fifth time on the season. Kenny Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) recorded the final out of the ninth inning in his sixth appearance of the year
