WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene baseball team halved a league twinbill at Gordon Friday afternoon, absorbing a 4-1 loss before prevailing 3-0.
The Lions reach 7-8 on the year and 1-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the decisions. The Fighting Scots move to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in league contests.
Pat Yee (Lynnfield, Mass.) led the visitors with three base hits, two stolen bases, one RBI and a run scored. Anthony Berroa (Teaneck, N.J.) landed three hits and scored a run on the day. Kurt Picarelli (Montrose, N.Y.) finished with a pair of base knocks, one RBI and a run. Spyro Varetimos (North Attleboro, Mass.) also chipped in with a hit and RBI.
Eastern Nazarene seized a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Yee came around to score from first base as Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) reached on a throwing error.
Gordon responded with four runs in the home half of the frame. Alex Smith and Travis Pullen each crossed the plate as Joe Olszak got aboard on a throwing error. Jesse Amaya laced a two-out single to right to drive in Olszak. Mark Fitzgerald capped off the scoring with an RBI single to left field to plate Eric Walker.
Brandon Wells (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) hurled a complete game in his third start of the year, striking out four batters in six innings.
The Lions grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the second inning of the nightcap. After Jake Koch drew a one-out walk, Picarelli raked a triple to left field to drive in the visitors' first run of the contest. Picarelli scampered home as Varetimos legged out an infield hit.
Eastern Nazarene tacked on a run in the sixth to stretch its lead to three runs, 3-0. Berroa led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by David Manning (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Yee drove in Berroa from second base with a single to the gap in right-center.
Quentin Moore (Sheridan, Calif.) tossed a two-hit shutout in his second start on the mound this spring, going the distance and fanning three en route to earning his first win.
