Baseball Swept by Wentworth Under the Lights at Adams Field
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene baseball team absorbed a pair of losses to Wentworth Wednesday evening at Adams Field.
The Lions slide to 6-7 on the spring and 0-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the results. The Leopards improve to 11-11 overall and 4-6 in league play with the wins.
Anthony Berroa (Teaneck, N.J.) paced Eastern Nazarene offensively with three base knocks and two runs scored. Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) chipped in with a pair of hits, one run scored and a stolen base. Jake Koch (Dayton, Nev.) drove in two RBIs and landed one hit on the evening while David Manning (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) each finished with a base knock and run scored.
Wentworth opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Jon Spitz crossed the plate on a groundout to the second baseman by Jake Mailman.
The Leopards doubled their advantage in the third, 2-0. After Spitz sliced a one-out triple to right field, Anthony Matera drove in Wentworth's second run of the contest with a single through the right side of the infield.
Berroa pitched five and a third innings in his fourth start of the spring and struck out four batters while allowing two hits. Nathan Russell (San Diego, Calif.) induced the final two outs of the sixth inning in his fourth appearance on the hill.
Zack Bernier tossed a complete game and registered seven strikeouts in his fifth start for the Leopards.
In the nightcap, Wentworth grabbed a 1-0 edge in the home half of the first as Matera slid into home safely as Jon Hulme got caught in a run-down between first and second base.
The Leopards extended their lead to seven runs in the third, scoring six times. Jon Hulme drove in Matera and Spitz with a single to left-center. Hulme came around to score on a throwing error after stealing third. Greg Confessore singled up the middle to plate Jordan Burst and Mailman. Confessore crossed the dish as Paul Dassau reached base on an error.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 7-2. With the bases loaded, Koch carved a two-out single to the gap in right-center to score Berroa and Manning.
The Lions rallied in the fifth, tallying three runs to pull to within two, 7-5. Justin Wagner motored home from first as Jeremy Wagner reached first on a throwing error. Jeremy Wagner came around to touch the plate on a wild pitch. Berroa scored for the second time in the game on a fielder's choice as Pat Yee (Lynnfield, Mass.) got on base.
Wentworth reclaimed a five-run advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating three runs. Spitz scored from third on a fielder's choice by Hulme with no outs. Mailman lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right field to allow Matera to tag up and scamper home. Hulme followed with the Leopards' final run of the game as he stole home.
Frank Fusco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tossed three innings and struck out four batters while scattering three hits.
Russell made his second pitching appearance of the day in the fourth inning. The senior logged two innings of relief and fanned a pair while allowing no base hits. Nick Penkala (Nashua, N.H.) tossed one inning of relief, retiring the three batters he faced.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will take on Gordon in a conference doubleheader April 11.
