FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Eastern Nazarene baseball team opened the 2014 season with a pair of victories over Emerson Saturday at the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Lions claimed a 9-3 win in the opener and completed the sweep with a 7-4 decision in the second contest, giving first-year head coach Addison Rouse his first two victories at the helm of the program.
Eastern Nazarene begins the season with a 2-0 record while Emerson falls to 2-7 on the year.
In game one, Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) went 2-for-2 from the plate with one walk, four stolen bases, three runs scored and two RBIs. David Manning (Yorktown Height, N.Y.) also collected two hits while drawing a pair of walks and driving in two RBIs.
On the mound, Anthony Berroa (Teaneck, N.J.) tossed four innings to pick up the win. Berroa fanned six batters while surrendering just one hit and one walk.
In the second game of the day, Doug English (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) earned the win after pitching four innings and recording two strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs, two walks and four hits.
Offensively, Berroa paced Eastern Nazarene with three RBIs. Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) chipped in with two stolen bases, two runs scored, one RBI, one walk and a base knock.
Senior Jeff Greenfield (Morris Plains, N.J.) collected his first collegiate base hit in the twinbill, raking a double to the warning track.
Eastern Nazarene racked up 16 stolen bases on 17 attempts in the doubleheader.
Up next, the Lions will face Finlandia March 10 as they continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic.
